Waiting for Fantail
Over the warmer part of our year in 2024 I developed an intriguing friendship. Our yard enjoys a variety of urban wildlife, some are visitors and others live here in our garden. One day a crow showed up and perched on one of the wires running over our patio. As I regularly do I started talking to him or her and said I’ll call you crow because I don’t know your name. yet. With great style and wisdom the crow spread out its tail! Thus the crow and its family became known as Fantail. They would stop by for some of the peanuts that I leave out for the blue jays. Eventually I started putting a bit of dog kibble out for them (which also reduced the likelihood of them dropping odd food treasures in the yard and water dishes that would be bad for our dogs). Last year I spent a lot of time just enjoying the yard and hanging out with our shelties. The Fantails would visit with us and even drop some of the kibble to share with the dogs. Now that spring is sneaking up I find myself watching and waiting for the Fantails to return from their winter migration.
